Will the X Files Continue Without Scully
X-Files star David Duchovny says that he's still open to returning for another installment of the long-running sci-fi series. Duchovny originated the role of the conspiratorial-minded FBI Agent Fox "Spooky" Mulder in 1993. He starred alongside Gillian Anderson as Agent Dana Scully, his pragmatic partner and the skeptical foil to Duchovny's obsessive investigator. Together, the duo would explore inexplicable and seemingly paranormal mysteries that were deemed too bizarre for traditional detectives. The show had an initial run of nine seasons, concluding in 2001.
However, there was still plenty of life left in theX-Files franchise. In addition toX-Files: Fear the Future, a 1998 movie that was released during the show's original run, the series also got a second movie in 2008 withX-Files: I Want to Believe. The show would get a short-lived spinoff in 2001 withThe Lone Gunmen, a show that followed some of the core series' supporting characters/comic relief. And the series would see renewed life once again whenThe X-Files was rebooted as a six-episode limited series in 2016 that proved successful enough for FOX to order a season 11 in 2018. While no new projects set in theX-Filesuniverse have been announced since, at least one of the stars is still showing interest.
In a recent interview withYahoo! Entertainment,Duchovny revealed that he's still open to the possibility of returning to the franchise. He praised showrunner Chris Carter for how the series was able to foresee societal shifts with his storytelling, saying that many of his plots from 1993 still resonate today. Here's what Duchovny had to say when asked about coming back to the series:
I'm always up for more, clearly. Someone sent me a clip of Joel McHale from the 2016 episodes we did, and it's a spot-on description of where we're at six years later. I don't think Chris Carter gets enough credit for being [prescient]. Forget about the ins and outs of plots and who gets pregnant or who gets shot. I mean, every show turns into a soap opera, so you have limited options. People are going to die or get pregnant or go to prison, right? Or become president.
I think like it's a little bit in the weeds to worry about characters' fates, when you realize that Chris somehow made a show in 1993, and again in 2016, that predicted what 2022 would be like. If he wanted to do more, I'd certainly listen to him. I'd say, "What have you got?
While Duchovny may be keen to return to theX-Files universe, it would likely have to be without his stalwart partner. Gillian Anderson has stated that she has no interest in returning to the role of Agent Scully after X-Filesseason 11, saying she didn't want to be tied to one character for her entire career. At the time of her departure, FOX stated that the series would not continue without Anderson's involvement, so unless she's since had a change of heart, getting another reboot off the ground could prove difficult, at least with the original core cast. However, Duchovny himself was absent for much of seasons 7-9 of the original show, so there is a precedent for the series continuing without one of its leads.
Only time will tell whether or not audiences will get to see any further adventures of Mulder and Scully. The fact that the show has seen so many spinoffs, adaptations, and revivals since its premiere nearly 30 years ago is a pretty clear sign that an audience still exists for additional content set in the universe. It'd be hard to imagine an X-Filesstory without Dana Scully helping to lead the way, but Fox Mulder, at least, is ready for his next case.
