Community Gardening Initiative
The Need to Feed, Inc. grows fresh fruits and vegetables in square foot gardens for local food pantries who then distribute the produce to those in need.
Square foot gardening is a method that sets plants in a grid pattern rather than in rows with spaces left between. The basic unit is a block, three feet by three feet or four feet by four feet, that is further divided into one-foot squares. Each block is surrounded by paths on all four sides. The gardener steps only on the paths, so the soil does not become packed down.
When a square is harvested, new seeds or transplants are planted immediately. This allows for steady production and maximum yield. A square may contain one to sixteen plants, depending on each crop's requirements.
Community Cafe
Transforming fresh produce into nutritious, tasty and budget friendly dishes are the main objectives during this entertaining and insightful program, which is taught by a professional chef.
This course is offered to anyone looking for healthy meal options that their families will love.
Nutrition education, menu planning and hands on cooking are all part of the curriculum during the kitchen portion of the program.
During the dinner portion of the program participants serve a three course meal to family, friends and members of the community. All meals consist of an appetizer, main entre and dessert.
